The One Room Challenge: An Amazing Boost for an Office/Guest Room Makeover
Recently, I announced that I would be tackling a makeover for my home office/guest room. If there is one activity that gets my creative vibes pulsating off the charts, it has to be the One Room Challenge! During previous challenges I undertook a deck makeover, hallway revamp which was followed by a styling refresh. And last year I did a living and dining room overhaul that was inspired by my family.
Yep! Just as the process of smelting purifies metal, so this 6-week one room transformation challenge is almost guaranteed to refine your design & styling prowess. You’ll see evidence of that right away as you click through the links above. Therein lies the secret to its amazing popularity.

What is the One Room Challenge?
The One Room Challenge is an enthusiastic 6-week design challenge. Every April and October, literally scores of design/decor lovers participate by sharing their own process of transforming a room of their choice. The ORC is not a competition, but rather a celebration of creativity, inspiration, and original ideas. Anyone with an Instagram account or a blog is welcome to join in on the fun!
2019 ORC Schedule: Week 1: Inspiration // Week 2: Architectural Interest // Week 3 IKEA PAX Hack - // Week 4 - Mystery Hack // Week 5 - The 5th Wall // Week 6: Reveal Time
Why You Should Participate in the One Room Challenge
The benefits of taking part in the ORC are numerous. Personally, these timed makeovers are the only way I ever really get projects completed in my OWN house. Additionally, I’ve honed my shopping, project sourcing and budgeting, time-management and photography skills.
There is no "winner" and no prize for engaging in the challenge. Yet the positive pressure of a world-wide audience, a strict timeline and the genuine camaraderie of literally hundreds of other participants makes everyone push themselves just a little bit harder.
About My Office/Guest Room Makeover
Creating a multipurpose guest room is no doubt my most challenging feat yet because it serves so many functions. There are a few pieces of furniture from IKEA. Also in this space are a rather pricey desk and matching bookcase. None of the furniture in this room has ever been showcased in the best way, in my opinion.
This room is where I "office", exercise (when I don't feel like hitting the gym), watch television, and craft. Since my closet is located in this room, it's also where I get dressed. Oh, and did I mention that it’s also our guest room?
The Inspiration for My Space
I don't exactly have all the details ironed out yet. But my latest obsession with the color teal naturally lends itself to being used in this space. I also have a few inspiration photos to share. So without further ado, here are few random ideas for my guest room office revamp.

Attempting to transform a small den guest room, that serves so many important functions, will be tough, I won't lie. Did I mention that I plan to do it on a budget of just $500? Here's how that breaks down:
-Furnishings $200
-Building Mat'ls $125
-Accessories $ 130
-Lighting $45
Total: $500 (+20% contingency)
Yeah... I laughed too (and yes, I heard you). I'll at least promise to make this fun. Stay tuned...
