A Bedroom Refresh to Better Reflect Us
Not long ago, 2 years to be exact, I set out a plan for a bedroom refresh in order to create the most beautiful and hypnotic bedroom space I could for da mista and I. I DIY’d a custom design on the headboard to make an eye-catching focal point. We then added a new memory foam mattress, a romantic bedroom light fixture , and some comfy pillows. Even the hidden spaces were purged to create a well organized bedroom. BAM! It was a total success! Or so I thought…

One peaceful morning while lying in bed thinking about the events of the day ahead, I turned to my husband as he was scrolling through his cell phone. “Don’t you just love the color of these walls?”, I asked. I was smiling inside, so proud of what we had accomplished. He paused and said, “Mmmm…no, not really.” Insert loud tire screech. “What?!”, I said. “How on earth did THIS happen?”
For the record, I polled my husband on every decision made regarding this room’s decor. The dude even helped me paint it. But he is notorious for giving vague, incomplete - or, as in this case - shockingly delayed responses. Does he have strong opinions about our home’s aesthetics? Yes! For instance, he only likes harsh, blinding white-on-bright-white walls. Had I decided to paint the room white, no doubt, he would have let his voice be heard.
But this wall color choice really wasn’t a concern for him. So he just went along with it. I have to admit, I admire his peaceable spirit. Still, this revelation made me feel so bad. When he said he wanted to go back to the 1990’s sage green walls however, my guilty sentiments quickly melted away. (Insert squinting suspicious emoji) Here’s a quick reminder of how those sage green walls looked.
Yeah…Nuh-uh, not happening. Like, neva-evah again not happening. However, I was open to a few light updates. So I started by removing the large doses of pink that flooded the space starting with switching out the pillows and artwork. Little did I know what lay ahead.
An Invitation to #freshspacefebruary
Although I was pleased with my simple changes, I knew the space would need more than an instant-quick update to better reflect a couple’s space. Then, I received an invitation from my friend Tiffany over at My Eclectic Nest to join a 4-week room refresh mini-challenge. And it was on like popcorn!
Tiffany is one of the most resourceful women I know! Although she had never arranged anything like this before, she had nearly all of the details in place in no time at all. Impressive. She also assembled a total of 9 participants and a small group of generous sponsors.
My Shortlist of Low-Cost Bedroom Updates
So what’s my plan? If you’ve been with me for a while, you know that I rarely have a full on mood board when I start projects in my own home. But here is a list of some low-cost updates that I’m planning for this space.
Add wall moulding
Add crown molding (maybe)
Update the room’s only wall sconce
Find a new dresser second hand (I’m excited about this one)
Update the mirror
Add new artwork
Notice that I made no mention of painting. Yep, those soft plum walls will be staying. But if I do this correctly, I should be able to strike a good balance between The Husband’s personality and mine. We shall see.
In the meantime, I invite you to check out what some of the other ladies are doing. Not all of them have blog posts regarding the challenge. And most, including me, will be giving live updates in our stories on instagram. So I encourage you to hop on over, give us a follow and join in on the fun!
