One Room Challenge: Working Around the Obstacles

One Room Challenge | Week 3 of 6

It's week 3 of the One Room Challenge; an event hosted by Linda of CallingitHome.com in conjunction with House Beautiful where participants makeover one room of their choice in 6 weeks or less.

As with any challenge there are  obstacles to overcome.  This one is no different. We're already halfway thru this challenge, and I've already faced some major setbacks.  There are three to be exact:

3 Main Obstacles of this Challenge

1.  The Tree Stumps

I desperately wanted to find a way to incorporate these old tree stumps into my finished room.  However, I did a bit of research and learned that they must be allowed to dry out in a covered space for several months before attempting to paint or sand them.  We have about 5 of them.  So I'll have to examine them closely to see if any are dry enough to re-purpose.  Any that are usable will have to be treated for insects first.  That will take quite a bit of time, so these may end up as firewood, instead of the stylish coffee table I imagined.  Tee hee!

2.  The Gazebo

I probably should have mentioned this in the beginning, but my husband and I have NO IDEA how to build a gazebo.  Yeah, yeah, there are plenty of YouTube videos, blog articles, and books on the matter.  But the fact remains - we've never done it. Yet here it is - week 3 - and we haven't even started.  What is worse, the person who was going to assist us is not in the best of health these days.  So we may be flying solo. Yikes!  As a refresher, below is one of the looks we're going for.

3.  Island Hopping

You'll notice that this post is about 5 days late.  The reason?  Our family had a planned vacation just as this challenge was starting.  So, if you follow me on Instagram, then you know that I was in the Dominican Republic all last week.

To make matters worse, we were in such a remote location of the island that internet access was either scarce or painfully slow.  So any work on this project was out of the question.  Although I didn't get much done, I did find lots of high-end  inspiration.  Take a look.

Am I a silently panicking inside?  Ummm-n...yeah.  But I'm an optimistic person, and I believe that I will catch up soon.  Since I'm doing this makeover on such a strict budget, most of my items will be DIY's.  Here's what I have on my checklist of things to do this week:

  • Punch up the color on an outdoor rug that I purchased second hand
  • Upgrade my faded outdoor cushions with a bit of creative painting (Yes, you read that correctly.  I plan to use paint)
  • Update a $5 chandelier that dear friend gifted me a couple of years ago.
  • Source pillows, ottomans, coffee tables and a couple of chairs
  • Purchase materials for the gazebo

Whew!  That's a LOT.  Wish me the best!
