One Room Challenge: The Big Push to the Finish

ORC Week 6 of 7

We’ve reached what should technically be the last week of the One Room Challenge hosted by CallingItHome and media sponsor House Beautiful.  And boy am I ever glad to have an extra week!

While my room is technically finished, I keep finding more things to tweak.  This is final push week.  Time to touch up paint, reinstall baseboards,  and caulk.  In addition to that, there’s still one more thing I have yet to do… Hang that DIY chandelier I shared with you last week.

The good news is that we finally decided on a color for the floor stain.  But the final choice couldn’t be further away from the original plan.  We chose white.  Aye!

The story behind this drastic change has to do with my husband.  See, while I make 90% of the décor and renovation decisions, I like our home to reflect both of our tastes.  So I often ask the husband for his input.  That, of course, comes with a few complications.  One of those being that sometimes, our design ideas don’t always jive, #nahwatimsayin?

Sooo…one morning the husband says…I would like try a white floor.”  The silent scream that went off inside my head was deafening.  Huh?  What???  Like, like…right now …in the middle of the challengeyou want to explore a white floor??  I somehow managed to avoid articulating any of this and settled with a deadpan stare.

To further complicate matters, the husband, doesn’t always know how to describe the design he’s envisioning.  This means that I have to play design psychologist.  Thank goodness for Pinterest and Houzz.com.  I was a bit nervous about the decision, but after finding these great photos, we decided to try to create this look:

We made one modification though.  Instead of going with a stark white, as shown in the photos above, we decided to do a whitewashing technique like the one below.

Our Attempt to Whitewash Hardwood Floors

The first attempt left us with what the husband referred to as powder-blue floors.  Not good.  While I disagree with that description, I hated the result just the same and offered zero resistance.  As it turns out, the leftover white paint we used was too cool for the space.  After color-matching the warmer white used in the wallpaper to the paint, we tried a second time.  SCORE!  Below are the results:

This hallway is starting to look more like a room each day that we get closer to reveal day!  I feel as if I've stepped into a boutique each time I see it.   Seriously, I could sleep here.  The whitewashed floors are a great contrast to the bold wallpaper.

By the way, don't mind that loose baseboard in the corner there.  All the finishing touches will be in place for the final reveal.

This runner was a nightmare to put down.  But the results are so worth all the sweat, sweat and sweat that the husband and I put into it.  This has become my favorite new space! The console that I found for a steal at $40 paired perfectly with the natural fiber runner.

Now on to the fun part - styling the space.  I can't wait to finally show you everything in place.  What do you think so far?  Did the husband make a good call with the whitewashed floors?
