One Room Challenge: An Area of the Home We've Ignored— Until Now
ORC Week 1 of 7
Welcome to Week 1 of the One Room Challenge! I can’t tell you how excited I am to be able to take you on this journey with me as I transform one room of my home.
For those of you who are new here, the One Room Challenge (ORC) is a six week makeover project hosted by Linda of Calling It Home and media partner House Beautiful. Bloggers like me, along with 20 featured designers will detail our design plans, and highs and lows, as we makeover one room of our choice. Every seven days we all journal our progress by means of a blog post, and will link it to a central location at Calling It Home.
The time passes remarkably fast. And as is the case with any remodel or makeover projects, anything outside of your original design plan is bound to happen.

This will be my second time participating in the ORC. My husband and I are accustomed to helping others with their home projects and design dilemmas. Yet during my Spring 2017 participation, I quickly realized that this program provided the perfect “excuse” needed to to get us excited about taking on projects in our own home. Let me tell you...he and I just devoured our very first project; throwing every ounce of energy we had into it. It was a ton of work but an AH-mazing adrenaline rush ! If you missed that post click here to read it.
When I mentioned that I wanted to participate again in the Fall round, he just shrugged his shoulders and said “OK“ without any expression. But I KNOW my husband y'all. Like me he enjoys purposeful work, and loves a good challenge.
What room will we tackle this time? I’m happy to say that the project this time around will be much less ambitious. Still it comes with its own list of hurdles. It measures only 36" wide by about 14' long. The ceiling here is taller than any other in our home.
Please meet our hallway.
Alright, so technically speaking this is not a traditional "room". But it is practically impossible to access many other places of the home without going through this lonely stark corridor. As one approaches this...this tunnel, there is an abrupt disconnect. This hallway looks like NO other room in the house.
There are times when I just quickly run through it- even skipping 1-2 steps at a time - just to keep from looking at it. (giggles) Whenever I stumble along the way, I quickly recover and continue my sprint until I’ve arrived “safely” on the other side (giggling uncontrollably now). At last, the pressure of the One Room Challenge has beckoned me to finally slay this hallway!
Now that I’ve entertained you with a bit of dramatic storytelling, let's check out the plan.
Before you go gettin' yourselves too attached to this photo, let me warn you. The final reveal will probably look NOTHING like this. Every single element in this inspiration mood board, with the exception of the runner, will be a slightly different. Why? Three reasons:
- The most difficult part about redoing a small space is finding items that fit inside it correctly. Of the two largest pieces featured above one is too big for the space.
- Color is seriously lacking in this mood board. I am a color girl (please say that slowly and carefully). But I've got a few tricks up my sleeve to give it a good punch.
- Some of the items featured in this mood board are E-X-P-E-N-S-I-V-E. That tribal necklace alone costs a gazillion dollars. And since I don't know anyone from a tribe who can loan me one, that means I'll just have to make it myself.
Yes, this small, unassuming "room" will be riddled with challenges. Next week, I'll present you with my checklist of items to be completed and will update you on my progress. In the meantime, feel free to check out the 20 Featured Designers here.
Please tell me. I'm eager to know. What do you think of the inspiration for this room makeover
