One of a Kind Furniture for a More Fascinating Small Space

This post has been sponsored by Nakturnal, yet all opinions are 100% my own. To read my full disclosure click here.

People often make the mistake of thinking that a more petite dwelling calls for repetitive, ordinary furnishings. However, one benefit of tighter living quarters is that it costs a lot less to furnish them. This often leaves room in the budget for at least ONE signature piece of art or furniture to set off a space, or even an entire apartment.

That begs the questions: How do I decide what my signature piece will be? Where can I go to find that one-of-a-kind piece for my home? How much will this cost me?

For first time scouters of signature pieces, I suggest starting with something practical like a chair, bench or ottoman. These are my go to choices for both function as well as an opportunity to do something fun!. The best part is that you can fit a chair, bench or ottoman into most small spaces. Below are three great sources for unique pieces, ranging from high, mid and more modest budgets.

3 Places to Shop for One-of-a-Kind Furnishings

1. Sotheby’s Home (Price Range: High)

For those with more discriminating tastes and a wallet to match it, I suggest Sotheby’s Home. Sotheby’s is where designer furniture aficionados go to buy and sell the best in pre-owned furnishings, décor, antiques and vintage treasures. If you can’t find it at Sotheby’s - it probably doesn’t exist.

2 . Bolia (Price Range: Mid-High)

If a hip, swank, minimalist vibe is your jam I’d suggest searching for your signature piece at Bolia. I stumbled across this furniture maker last year and was immediately taken by it. No, the furnishings aren’t cheap. Remember though, you only need one piece to make a statement. Below is a just a taste of what they have to offer.

3. OfferUp (Low - Mid)

I know what you’re thinking, and no, I’m not kidding. I’ve written about the benefits of using the virtual garage sale app, OfferUp before. You might be surprised to know that a few of the items featured in my One Room Challenge makeover were found using that app.

The chairs in the photo below, for example, were purchased a year ago from a woman who needed to relocate from her penthouse in downtown Chicago, to Canada in a hurry. The weight, construction and fabric quality all tell me that these chairs might have originally cost at least $300-$400 each. My cost however was a mere $65 a piece. Now do you understand?

Of course these are not the only places to find designer furniture pieces, but they’re a pretty good place to start. Please tell me in the comments below:

  • Are you currently looking for a statement piece for your home?

  • Have you ever heard of any of the places mentioned above?

  • If yes, what was your experience like?
