Make a Room Glow in the Dark with this Daring Style

It’s no secret to regular readers of this blog that I enjoy masculine décor and moody interiors.  Easy to miss, I know, due to all pink and plum hues you see on this blog and around my home.  But there’s just something about dark tones that look and feel like earth; unpretentious, anchored and yet uninhibited.  It draws me in.  Every.  Single.  Time.

The trick for me, of course, is trying to create the look in my own home in a way that balances out masculine décor with the feminine touches that I also enjoy.  Recently I stumbled across a trend that encapsulates this blend perfectly.  It’s called Midnight Garden.

What is the Midnight Garden Decorating Style?

Midnight Garden, as it relates to interiors, is a luscious opulent look that combines dark moody walls with pops of colorful rich jewel tones.  It is often infused with garden motifs (or even real flowers) to evoke a look of history or nostalgia.  While I can’t be dogmatic about it, it appears to be influenced by the English gardens of the U.K. or 17th century Dutch Masters like Rembrandt and Vermeer.  One thing is certain though, this style trending hotly right now in fashion and interiors, and it is undeniably alluring.

A few years ago, The Husband and I made the switch to dark walls in our dining room when we painted them Kendall Charcoal by Benjamin Moore.  We are so enamored with it that we’ve been contemplating carrying the look over into the adjacent living room space.  That north-facing room, however, already suffers from a lack of light.  So we’ve never pulled the trigger on changing the color.  This has lead us…ahem...me to take a closer look at the glow-in-the-dark concept of the Midnight Garden.

Incorporating the Glow in the Dark Look at Home

To be clear, you would be hard pressed to find any floral motifs in my home.  In fact, I don’t own any.  Geometric shapes, yes. Paisley and fauna, sure.  Flowers, negative – unless they're real.  The headboard in my bedroom is probably the closest thing to a floral motif in this house.   It’s just not my jam.  Even still I am in LOVE with this look!  And I am a die-hard fan of jewel tones.

I’ve been exploring ways to bring more of this historical-bohemian-chic look into our home.  But I need to do it in a way that reflects our personalities, and with a hint of glam (of course).  Below are a few examples that I discovered.

As you can see from the photos above photos, the look can be incorporated in traditional, modern and eclectic styles. That's huge for me because I enjoy a bit of flexibility with my decor.

I haven’t quite sorted it out yet, but the more I see it, the more convinced I am that this is the direction to take.  I’ll keep digging for ideas and will let you know what we’ve decided.  Yes, we.  The Husband is very involved in home décor decisions here.  But that’s a whole other post.

For now though, please share your thoughts with me on this trend in the comments below.  Specifically, I’d like to know:

  • Have you ever heard of the Midnight Garden?

  • What do you think of the look?

  • How might you modify it to fit YOUR taste?
