How I Make Space for My Creative Interests
Welcome Back! Today I'm continuing with the same theme I started with earlier in the week: finding space to house your craft. If you missed that post and would like to catch up, simply click here.
To reiterate though, the crafts I'm addressing in this post are not limited to cutesy crafts and doilies. A craft can be any medium that is used to express a talent or a passion. As promised, I plan to show you how I organize areas of my home to make room for my creative interests. So here goes...

Ideas for Carving Out Spaces for Crafts in Your Small Home
First, I think it's worth mentioning that I live in a 2 bedroom, 1 bath condo that measures just a hair over 900 square feet. While that may sound painfully small to many, it's actually pretty spacious.
My "craft" area is located in our guest bedroom. This is also where the office and my closet (one of only 3 in the entire home) are located. Now that I've given you the lay of the land, lets take a look at how I store all of my "toys"
Just in case you missed it, I've numbered the shelves in the photo above to make this easier to explain. Each shelf is broken down by category. They are:
#1 Bluetooth speaker system, favorite hat, and greenhouse
#2 Bible Study Materials
#3 Crafting Supplies
#4 Home Decor Mags, Drawings, and Digital Music Recordings
#5 Language Arts: Spanish and French study materials (I speak French fluently, which has seriously crippled my Spanish - but that's a story for another post)
Notice that shelf #3 is where I keep all those tiny craft pieces that are hard to keep up with. There are six white boxes. Each is carefully labeled to indicate its contents. The labels are:
- Adhesives
- Brushes
- Cutting Tools
- Embellishments/Beads
- Paints & Stains
- Various Odd & Ends
Don't let the size of these boxes fool you though. I can pack quite a bit in of each of them. Below is a sampling of what's inside.
Layering Your Storage Allows for Greater Flexibility
Notice that I layer my storage. In other words I practice the "container inside of a container" idea. So instead of just tossing loose supplies into the boxes, I purchased a few clear pencil cases from DollarTree and compartmentalized them. This arrangement helps me to find what I'm looking for quickly. It also helps me to keep them neat. But there's more... directly across from the bookcase sets this convertible IKEA daybed.
Since I sometimes assist with wedding reception decor, I've accumulated a small collection of wedding "stuff" - for lack of a better word. Since I need the space, I am in the process of getting rid of it. For now though it lives in the drawer below.
Finally, there is one more craft - that I have yet to perfect which takes up the most room in my home. It's located in my living room.
Liberace I certainly am NOT. However, when I practice the way I am supposed to, I do enjoy this instrument immensely.
