Exciting Design Trends for 2019 from Maison et Objet

There is a French international trade fair that is taking Europe and many other parts of the world by storm called Maison et Objet. The company that orchestrates it (also called by the same name) describes itself as is the international authority for home decor, interior design, architecture and lifestyle culture and trends through its shows, events and its digital platform.

While it’s a fact that design trends come and go, a small few strike the chords that make them last over time.

For the pleasure of those interested in tightening up the bohemian-inspired spaces of their homes, I’ve teamed up with two of my design buddies who live in France - Darrylyn Swift of Noir Chic Designs, and Marie Lacote of Velvet Jungle Interiors. Both ladies attended the event, and together, they will help me bring to you a few of the biggest design trends for 2019 from MAISON & OBJET, Paris. Darrylyn provided the content, while Marie and Maison et Objet contributed the photos.

10 Ways to Go Beyond Superficial Decor

The overwhelming consensus is that for 2019 “vanilla” design is out, and authenticity is in. Yay for that! Here are 10 solid ways you can get the look.

1. Texture, Texture and More Texture

Create a winning look by layering your room with texture (rather than STUFF). It will make your spaces feel cozy, warm and lived in. Combining different textures brings excitement.

2. Interesting Shapes

Pay attention to the shape of any new furnishings you purchase. Look for unique shapes that can still stand throughout time.

3. Velvet

There’s no need to go into a ton of detail on this one. It’s almost always the fabric of choice for chic spaces - can you say soft LUXURY?!

4. Say Hello to Color - Especially Gem Tones

Rich and vibrant reds, greens, blues and yellows will be all the rage in 2019. And although orange is not a jewel tone, it's definitely a part of the trend.

5. Big bold wallpaper

Darrylyn admits that she’s not sure how long this will last since wallpaper can sometimes be hard to remove. So she suggests adding a bold printed paper to an oversized canvas. That will allow the beautiful wallpaper to still take center stage.

I’m happy to say that J’adore le Decor got ahead of the curve on this one! Ha! Check out the fuchsia velvet damask wallpaper below, which I installed during my latest makeover. Since it’s only on a portion of the wall, I completely avoid the nightmare of having to remove it from a large area.

6. Metals of all Kinds

Metals in art, on mirrors - everywhere. Copper was the big hit in this department.

7. Style AND Function - Not Either Or

Having a stylish BUT functional home will be key in 2019. Every room should be one that people can live in, and envision sharing with others. That is an outstanding trend to follow.

8. More Style, Less Stuff

No need to have something everywhere or on every wall. Having too many accessories can actually make the room feel cluttered and dated. Look for signature pieces that offer high style - then you'll only need a few of them.

Think about the amount of money spent on a lot of little things and forgo that. Then put the same amount into ONE signature piece.

9. Just Say “No” to Matchy-Matchy Decor

We all know that matchy, matchy is not design - but if that's what you like, go for it. BUT think about adding a few vintage pieces around the room to give visual interest and make the home feel curated - like you've collected items throughout the years.

10. Learn How and When to Break the Rules

Don't be afraid to break the rules - just a little. But keep in mind that rules bring an overall sense of cohesion. Following a few basic rules on color, size and scale will enhance your spacial design and provide an overall elevated look.
